Camp Lejeune Community Information

Camp Lejeune provides a complete lifestyle for military personnel and their families. The intramural sports program gives men and women the opportunity to compete in many team and individual sports. Kids have similar options through the Camp Lejeune Youth Sports Program, which manages seasonal league play for soccer, football, basketball, baseball, golf and more. Sports-oriented summer camps are also available. For unstructured play, kids and their parents can visit the Area 2 Pool, the Tarawa Terrace Outdoor Pool, the Bonnyman Bowling Center or the Scarlet and Gold Riding Club. There are also two 18-hole golf courses at Paradise Point Golf Club.

Public education for children living on the base in military housing is provided by Camp Lejeune Dependents Schools. The school system, independent of Onslow County public schools, manages four elementary campuses, one intermediate school and one high school. Children living outside the base would be under the jurisdiction of Onslow County Schools, a district that is 35-schools strong.

The New River Marine Corps Base makes a significant contribution to the overall Onslow County economy. Prior to the 1940s, the county was mainly supported by agriculture. Over the last 60-plus years, the presence of Camp Lejeune has reduced the local economy’s dependence on farming by adding opportunities in government, retail trade and services. In 2003, the base provided an estimated economic impact of $5.2 billion to the local economy.

The weather in Onslow County is generally warm and mild. Temperatures vary from the low 90s in July to the mid-30s in January. Rainfall averages about 55 inches throughout year and tends to peak in July, August and September. The area does receive a bit of snowfall in the coldest months of December, January and February.
